The Horizons region extends over 22,200km2 – from Ruapehu in the north and Horowhenua in the south, to Whanganui in the west and Tararua in the east. The role 

Horizons Regional Council is looking for a creative and experienced communicator to add value to our small but mighty media and communications team. This is a permanent full time position based in either our Palmerston North or Whanganui office.

Working across the organisation you will help raise awareness and understanding of Horizons’ role in managing natural resources within our region, while increasing engagement with our communities through communications planning, advice, and management.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years’ experience and have the ability to work across the organisation, from staff and senior managers to group managers and governance, to help raise awareness of Horizons’ role. 

We can offer you a varied, busy and interesting position that covers social, economic, cultural and environmental issues for a vast region full of diverse communities. Our stakeholders include residents, ratepayers, community groups, iwi and hapū, landowners, local and central government, and other agencies and project partners. 

Our communications team is one where everyone chips into the delivery of community engagement, and media, digital, event, and campaign management. We also have a role in civil defence and emergency management public information management. 

About you 

We’re after someone with a critical eye for detail, creative nous for design and delivery, and an ability to meet challenging deadlines and tight budgets. You must be comfortable using a wide range of traditional and digital platforms to engage and inspire an audience. 

The successful candidate should hold a graduate qualification in marketing or communication management and have experience in creating media releases, content for web and social, video production and editing, implementing communications campaigns, compiling advertisements and publications, and copywriting for a number of channels.
