Southern Cross Hamilton Hospital is a well-equipped private surgical hospital based in central Hamilton, proudly providing a wide range of surgical specialties to the wider Waikato community for many years. Our hospital has eight fully equipped operating theatres, 43 inpatient beds (including four high-dependency unit beds), and a purpose-built Day Surgery Unit. We offer a range of specialties, including but not limited to, orthopaedics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, spine, and general surgery specialties.
Comfortable facilities, combined with the very latest in technology and on-site support services, enable independent credentialled medical practitioners to undertake a wide range of procedures. These include routine investigations to complex surgery, with their expertise supported by caring, professional nursing teams.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
Ready to take the next step in your nursing leadership career? As our Clinical Nurse Lead – Ward, you will provide hands-on clinical and operational leadership to support the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care at Southern Cross Hamilton Hospital. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position working rostered shifts.
As a key clinical resource for the ward team, you will lead day-to-day ward coordination, support patient flow, manage complex clinical situations, and provide coaching and guidance to nurses and healthcare assistants. You will work closely with both experienced senior nurses and new graduates, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
We are looking for an adaptable and approachable leader who thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment and can support teams through change. You will champion clinical excellence, quality improvement, and professional development while ensuring exceptional patient outcomes and a positive patient experience.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate
- Minimum 5 years' recent post-graduate nursing experience
- PDRP Level 4 (Expert) or equivalent advanced practice experience
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to coach, develop and support nursing teams
- Recent surgical ward experience and/or HDU experience
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to support and mentor both experienced nurses and new graduates
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to coordinate day-to-day ward operations
- Adaptable leader who can drive change and support continuous improvement
- Commitment to quality patient care, cultural safety, and evidence-based practice
- Experience in General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology and/or Neurology is desirable
- Previous experience in a Clinical Nurse Lead, Charge Nurse, Associate Charge Nurse, or similar leadership role is desirable
