Southern Cross Auckland Surgical Centre is a superbly equipped private surgical hospital based in Remuera, Auckland. This leading private hospital has been providing quality, professional care since 1987, when it opened as New Zealand’s first purpose-built short stay surgical hospital.

Significant expansion onsite has allowed the hospital to accommodate four operating theatres, stage one recovery facilities, day-stay recovery areas, and a 17 bed overnight stay facility. The hospital employs a caring, experienced staff of around 90, providing services and excellent post-operative care to around 5,000 patients each year, across a range of surgical specialties.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As the Ward Clinical Nurse Lead, you will play a critical role in leading and supporting the nursing team to deliver safe, high-quality care in a surgical ward setting. Reporting to the Theatre Services Manager, you will provide clinical oversight, mentorship, and operational leadership to ensure nursing practice aligns with Southern Cross Healthcare’s standards and values.

This is a full-time, 40-hour role, with one day per week dedicated to administration tasks, allowing you to focus on planning, performance reviews, resourcing, and quality improvement initiatives.

You will be responsible for managing staff performance, fostering a positive and inclusive team culture, and ensuring the delivery of patient-centred care. This role requires advanced clinical expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and a commitment to continuous improvement, professional development, and cultural safety.

You will work closely with internal stakeholders including the Senior Leadership Team and hospital staff, as well as external partners such as patients, families, and medical specialists.

  • New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate 
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant post-graduate nursing experience
  • Inspiring leadership – a track record of motivating, guiding, and empowering clinical teams
  • A commitment to clinical excellence – with a postgraduate qualification in progress or completed
  • Advanced clinical knowledge in surgical nursing, including emergency and complex case management
  • Confident with tech – you know your way around digital systems and can pick up new tools quickly
  • A natural team player – collaborative, reliable, and able to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment
