Southland District Council
Government - Local/Federal

Do you understand the science of climate change? Are you looking for an environmental policy role where your focus and passion for sustainability and carbon reduction will be welcomed with open arms?

Then you could be just the person we are looking for.

Southland District Council has responsibility for 11% of the land area of New Zealand and incorporates areas such as Stewart Island/Rakiura, Milford Sound Piopiotahi and the Catlins. The environment is second to none and the range of environmental issues extensive and varied.

We are passionate about our special place in the world and are committed to our communities and responsibilities as the kaitiaki for future generations. To be sure we can deliver on our responsibilities, we have a new role within our environmental planning team to lead the development and delivery of our climate change strategy and work programme.

This is an exciting opportunity for a 'blue-sky' thinker who is able to provide expert strategic planning advice on climate change matters to a wide variety of stakeholders in an ever-changing and challenging environment.

Our ideal candidate will

• be able to demonstrate sound analytical and critical thinking skills

• be experienced in working on climate change and environment related projects/initiatives

• confident in engaging and influencing a variety of stakeholders

• have excellent verbal and written communication skills that facilitate the establishment of credible and constructive working relationships

• ideally have previous experience in or a good understanding of local government

• be an engaging presenter that is able to build rapport and assimilate technical information quickly and repackage it into audience appropriate language

But most importantly because you will be working across Council and our communities, you need to be a great collaborator with solid relationship management and facilitation skills.

In return we recognise that staff are our most valuable asset. We believe in supporting them in their training and development, having competitive remuneration packages which are benchmarked against market rates and an environment which supports personal growth.

Southland has lifestyle covered too. Our head office is based in Invercargill but live in the city, at the beach with views of the mountains or on your own rural paradise. You choose. You can be 10 minutes from your home, work, sport, your kid’s school concert or a meal in our award-winning cafes. In two hours, you can be on the ski slopes or tramping in the bush or enjoying bigger city attractions. Southland offers superb lifestyle and recreational opportunities, world-class sports facilities, affordable housing and high-quality educational choices. And best of all you’ll have the time to enjoy it.

If this sounds like the next step in your career, don’t miss this exciting opportunity to help redefine local government in Southland. Visit to view a position description and apply online.
