Our role at Antarctica New Zealand is to support world-leading science and environmental protection in Antarctica. Led by our vision, “Antarctica and the Southern Ocean - valued, protected, understood”, we are the Crown entity responsible for developing, managing and executing New Zealand government activities in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. This includes accountability for Scott Base, the Antarctic research station. Our purpose is to inspire people to connect with Antarctica through knowledge and collaboration.  Building on New Zealand’s research in Antarctica over six decades, we have a strong commitment to the natural environment and are recognised as a leader in the international treaty system. 


Mō te mahi| About the role - What you’ll be doing  

Reporting to the Chief Executive and as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you'll provide strategic scientific leadership across the organisation and the wider Antarctic science community. You'll help shape New Zealand's Antarctic science priorities, build strong relationships across the research sector, government and Iwi partners, and ensure science continues to inform decision-making and policy.


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing trusted scientific advice to the Chief Executive, Board and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Leading Antarctica New Zealand's science function and contributing to organisational strategy and performance.
  • Shaping Antarctic science priorities and strengthening the connection between science, policy and decision-making.
  • Building and maintaining influential relationships across government, the science sector, Māori partners and international Antarctic organisations.
  • Championing scientific excellence, innovation and impact across New Zealand's Antarctic science programme.
  • Representing Antarctica New Zealand and New Zealand's Antarctic science interests nationally and internationally.

This role is about influence as much as expertise. We're looking for a respected leader who can connect people, ideas and opportunities, champion scientific excellence, and help New Zealand maintain its reputation in Antarctic research.


Skills and Experience Include:

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Leadership experience within science, research, policy or related sectors.
  • Understanding of the New Zealand science and research environment.
  • Proven ability to build trusted relationships and influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience translating complex scientific information into practical strategic advice.
  • A commitment to partnership, collaboration and environmental stewardship.
