What we are looking for in a Cargo Handler: 

We are looking for keen, hard-working and enthusiastic men and women to join our Operations Team.

As a permanent full time Cargo Handler you will be responsible for front line labouring and also operation of heavy machinery at the Port Otago terminal based in Port Chalmers, Dunedin. This is a physical role where you need to be comfortable working outside in all weather conditions at any hour, and be comfortable working at heights.

Things you should know about the job: 

In this role, you will be guaranteed 40 hours per week/ 5 days work per week based on 8 hour shifts rostered over a 7 day period. Flexibility around working hours is required as you could be asked to work day or night over a 24/7 period including public holidays as shifts worked is based on operational requirements.

What’s in it for you: 

This position attracts a competitive hourly rate. You may be required to work a 1st (7am - 3pm), 2nd (3pm - 11pm) or 3rd shift (11pm - 7am) on any given day. Any 3rd shifts worked attract an additional hourly allowance. 

In this role you are entitled to comprehensive health insurance cover and the ability to join an employer subsidised superannuation scheme after 6 months (7% subsidy).

Some of the qualities we are looking for:

  • A true passion for Health & Safety – not afraid to speak up!
  • The physical ability to undertake heavy labouring
  • The ability to work well as part of a team that deploys flexibility 24/7
  • Previous experience driving heavy machinery is desirable

Safety is our #1 priority and therefore preferred applicants will be required to have a pre-employment medical, including drug and alcohol tests. Port Otago also conducts random drug and alcohol tests on an on-going basis.

As our Port operates under the Maritime Safety Act, full Ministry of Justice Checks and ACC records will be conducted as part of the recruitment process, as well as thorough reference checking.
