Big Buddy Coordinator
Mō te tūnga | About the role:
As the Buddy Programme Coordinator for the Whakatipu area, you will lead the delivery of a well-established Family Works programme that supports tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau.
This role involves coordinating all aspects of the Buddy Programme, from assessing referrals and matching children with trained volunteer “Big Buddies”, to providing ongoing support and oversight to ensure each relationship is safe, positive and effective.
You will recruit, train and supervise volunteers, maintain strong relationships with families and community partners, and promote the programme within the wider community. This is a rewarding, relationship-focused role where you will make a meaningful difference by supporting children and young people to build confidence, resilience and positive connections.
We understand life can be busy, so we offer flexibility, this role is 20 hours per week, and we’ll work with you to find a schedule that suits both you and us.
Ngā kawenga | Key responsibilities:
- Coordinate and deliver the Buddy Programme, ensuring it meets Family Works service standards
- Assess referrals and match children and young people with suitable volunteer “Big Buddies”
- Maintain regular contact with children, families/whānau, and volunteers to support positive outcomes
- Recruit, train, and provide ongoing support and supervision to volunteer Big Buddies
- Organise programme activities, outings, and events to support engagement and connection
- Build and maintain relationships with community agencies and promote the Buddy Programme
Ngā pūkenga | What you will need to be successful:
- Experience working with children, young people, and families/whānau
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills across a wide range of people
- Ability to assess needs, make sound decisions, and manage risk appropriately
- Experience coordinating programmes, volunteers, or group activities (desirable)
- Cultural awareness and commitment to working in a way that respects diverse backgrounds
- Good organisational skills, including time management and accurate record keeping
