Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital is the southernmost private surgical hospital in the Southern Cross network, it is widely known and used by people throughout the Southland and Queenstown-Wakatipu basin areas.

The hospital features advanced theatre systems, including robotic orthopaedic surgery. Our highly skilled and caring team provide excellent care to 4200 patients per year. Our elective surgical services include Breast; Endoscopy and Gastroenterology; General; Gynaecology; Ophthalmology; Oral and Maxillofacial; Orthopaedic; Ear Nose and Throat; and Urology surgery. 

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We're seeking an experienced Anaesthetic Technician or RNAA to join our Theatre team as an Anaesthetic Team Leader in a permanent part-time (0.8 FTE) role. This is an exciting opportunity to combine your clinical expertise with leadership responsibilities in a busy and supportive perioperative environment.

Working closely with the Theatre Services Manager, you'll provide operational and clinical leadership for Anaesthetic Services, helping to ensure the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. As a senior clinician, you'll remain hands-on in the theatre while supporting the day-to-day coordination of the service.

You'll lead, coach, and mentor the anaesthetic team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. Through your guidance and expertise, you'll help build team capability, promote best practice, and support excellent patient outcomes.

Working alongside anaesthetists, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, you'll contribute to service development, quality initiatives, and equipment management, helping to drive the ongoing success and advancement of Anaesthetic Services.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Current NZ registration as an Anaesthetic Technician with a recognised qualification, OR a Registered Nurse with a current practising certificate and anaesthetic credentials
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience as an Anaesthetic Technician or RN Anaesthetic Assistant within an operating theatre environment is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise and a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality patient care.
  • The ability to lead, motivate, and support others in a fast-paced clinical setting
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Proven coaching, mentoring, and staff development capabilities
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • A proactive approach to quality improvement, patient safety, and service excellence
  • Previous leadership or senior clinician experience is desirable
  • Experience working within a private healthcare setting would be advantageous but is not essential
